The speed of information delivery over the Internet is a function of a complex digital Supply Chain, the aggregate speed of which is limited to the speed of the slowest component.
To improve the speed of information delivery, one may optimize the following components. As the speed is a function of the "weakest link", the slowest component should be improved first.
- The speed of the outside network
- The speed of the servers that deliver the web pages being loaded
- The type of media used by the web pages being loaded (i.e. text is fastest, followed by small images, followed by large images, followed by multimedia)
- The speed of your Internet connection provider (in Surrey BC, this is usually Shaw or Telus)
- The response times of the DNS servers that you are using
- The speed of your Internet connection (i.e. ADSL, cable modem, or dial-up)
- The speed of the connection between your computer and the hub
- The network card in the computer
- The network card driver
- Other downloads or uploads that may be occurring while you use the Internet
- Software that is installed on the computer, including the web browser being used
- The speed of the computer itself
